Downtown Korean Restaurant Announces Opening Date

Downtown Kokomo is about to embark on a culinary adventure like never before as Sokuri Sushi & Shabu Shabu, the city’s newest Korean culinary experience, opens its doors at the former location of Petite Patisserie at 108 N. Main St., Kokomo.

Organizers say this eatery promises more than just a flavorful meal — it’s an invitation to explore the rich tapestry of Korean flavors in the heart of downtown Kokomo.

The restaurant officially opens at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 25, according to general manager Jay Lim.

“We’re happy to bring healthy Korean food options to the town,” said Lim. “We want to show Korean culture and food to the people of Kokomo.”

Lim said his family was inspired to come to Kokomo after hearing of the arrival of StarPlus Energy LLC.

Head Chef at Sokuri, KJ Sohn, said he is excited to welcome a new cuisine to the Kokomo community as well.

“We think this town definitely needs Korean food,” Sohn said.

Sohn said the style of the lunch menu is similar to Chipotle, where guests can customize their own bento box meal, with protein, rice, vegetables, soups and other Korean menu items. (pictured on the left in the sequence below.)

While lunch options offer a more cafeteria-style culinary experience, the dinner menu will feature bansang, individual small dishes of food that accompany a main meal and are usually placed in the middle of the table to be shared as a group. (Pictured in the middle sequence above) and other formal sit-down menu items that require more preparation.

Sokuri will also specialize in shabu-shabu or “hot pot,” a dish where a large pot of broth is placed in the middle of a table for meats and vegetables to be cooked by the guest. Because of the timing preparation for this item, guests are requested to call ahead to make a reservation.

The menu will also feature rotational seasonal items such as bingsu, a Korean milk-based shaved ice dessert topped with various sweet toppings, such as fruits, rice cake, sweet red beans and condensed milk in the warmer months.

The restaurant’s hours will be 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Dinner reservations are required for groups of six or more, as well as the use of the two private party rooms.

Dinner reservations for private parties and groups of over six people can be placed by calling 765-416-2848 or 765-450-5808.
